Jeela Palluq-Cloutier

Jeela was born and raised in Iglulik, Nunavut and left at the age of 14 to attend High school in Iqaluit. Upon completion of High school, she started teaching Inuktut from grades 7 to 12. After obtaining her Bachelor of Education from the Nunavut Teacher Education Program through affiliation with McGill University she taught at the elementary level for three years. She then moved to Ottawa in 1998 and taught at the Nunavut Sivuniksavut Program.

Jeela moved back to Iqaluit in 2005 and joined the Pirurvik Center where she helped the Pirurvik team translating the Microsoft Office and the Language Interface Pack to Inuktut. She also helped in developing Inuktut language programs and Inuit language, culture and wellness activities. She has been working now with Inuit Uqausinginnik Taiguusiliuqtiit since January 2011 first as the Linguist and now as Executive Director. Jeela took a two-year leave from Taiguusiliuqtiit from January 2014 to November 2015 to work in Ottawa with Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami as the National Inuit Language Coordinator. Jeela obtained her Master’s degree from University of Prince Edward Island in May 2014.

Jeela’s passion is working with the Inuit language and its continued use and survival. She passionately enjoys learning about the language variants from Alaska to Greenland.
